It’s interesting how Central Coast photography work seems to constantly ebb and flow. This is noticeable in all aspects of our work from wedding photography which is traditionally seasonal (quieter in the winter months), portrait photography and commercial photography.
When out and about, it’s common to hear that “things are tough”, “there isn’t much money around” and “we are trying to reign in spending” but as far as I can tell, small business on the Central Coast is powering along.
We seem to be photographing more commercial work than ever before and most of this is for small business.
The photography has been varied too, which always makes it exciting and fun to shoot – there is usually room to ‘experiment’ a little and not have to play it safe like in some photographic situations. When I talk about variety in jobs, I guess that is in part, due to having a studio – both permanently set up and mobile.
Some of our recent Central Coast commercial photography jobs have included:
- Group staff photos
- Individual and head shots – profile photos
- Interior design photography
- Building exteriors
- Product photography – both in studio and on site
- Industrial Photography
- Doctors and Dentists
- Art work reproduction
- Corporate photography at events
Yes, the photography has been fun and varied. Here is a little more detail on some of the photo shoots and what was involved.
Platinum Dental Care at Erina – staff photos and a variety of images showing their incredibly modern facilities (both inside and out) and focus on customer care. Shot with mobile studio lighting, on and off camera flash and available light. These images will be used for web and print.
Gianni Hair Extensions – staff and salon images after a refit and totally new look. This was a great shoot as the complete process was directed by designer Alex Marks who gave a clear direction and brief on photography requrements and outcomes for print and digital reproduction – something we don’t always get.
Home ‘Specialist’ Property Management – group and individual staff photography for website and outdoor signage. This was a FUN shoot with Tennille and the girls who were happy to ‘work it’ for the shots. That and their work place looks slick, classy, modern and clean. Lots of laughs on this shoot!
Wamberal Doctors Surgery – which posed some photographic issues in regard to space and timing. The shoot had to go ahead on a busy day at their surgery with a large number of staff. The toughest hurdle was the requirement of a group shot of six to be taken in what was basically a small room.
The work around was to photograph each staff member and doctors separately against a plain white background. We then ‘cut out’ each person and combined them to form a ‘group photo’ – sounds easy but the tricky part was photographing the individuals in a variety of poses to be able to suitably place them in the group shot.
The process of removing an object or person from the background is known as ‘deep-etching’ and has become a bit of a specialty for us at Impact Images and is regularly sought after for both product photography and people photography – basically anywhere there is a need to remove an object from one background and place it on another, entirely different background.
Doctors – Dr James Hasn, the orthopaedic specialist and Dr John Limbers, a local shoulder surgeon and very busy Dad who are updating their images for the web, articles and print material. Both of these guys were true gentlemen and I would consider the Central Coast residents very lucky to have these guys working in our local hospitals.
Local Art Work – had to be photographed for a graduating art and design student that needed a ‘true’ representation of her work captured as photography for distribution on the web and for print. This job was shot ‘in studio’ with studio lighting. The main focus was colour, focus and keeping everything ‘square’ and in proportion for printing.
Fashion Photography – with Vibrant Concepts. Photographing Sam, Jordi and their team is always a pleasure and great fun. These ladies are constantly striving to stay ahead of the curve in regard to incoming fashion and style and are regularly updating their portfolio of images. Over the years, we have come to work like a well oiled machine and I am always amazed at the number of images we can deliver for Sam. It says so much for being organised, professional and knowing how to play up for the camera!
Industrial Photography – is alive and well on the Central Coast. I was recently asked onto a local chicken farm to photograph and showcase some hi-tech motors and components that are worth millions to the poultry industry and manufactured right here in our backyard at West Gosford.
Product Photography – is one area where we never know what we’re going to get. It’s fashion items for a glossy shopping catalogue at one shoot to motors and components for a website and price list at the next. These shoots usually entail the use of studio lighting and can be shot in studio, on location or outdoors – it all depends on the job and the size and weight of the products.
These are just a few examples from the last couple of busy months at Impact Images. It’s great to see local businesses thriving and to play a small part in their success, growth, image and brand.
I feel lucky, to be a small Central Coast business too.
