Often the first question we are asked when receiving enquiries about wedding photography is “How much do you charge?” The reason may be that people just don’t know what else to ask as it’s not every day that you go looking for a photographer, let alone a wedding photographer.
What I believe is a much more important question is what do you get for your investment? If the answer is amazing photographs, an awesome time at your wedding, a beautiful album and nothing cheesy, embarrassing or tacky then you are probably talking to a studio that will satisfy what you should get from every photographer but sadly don’t.
Here is an email message I received from Jacqui, a recent bride I photographed:
Oh the album sounds amazing, can’t wait to see it! I have been showing everyone the proof DVD! I even took my laptop out to dinner last week in town so I could show all my friends! The number of people who have said ‘what great photographs’ – ‘so natural’ and ‘what a brilliant photographer’ is unbelievable – everyone loves Andrew’s work!
I saw my friends wedding photos yesterday and honestly, they were such contrived shots, really awkward looking poses and both of them looked so uncomfortable!
Chris and I are going to order the one of us at the car on the bridge – the one Andrew used as the opening photograph on his blog – we both love it! Chris is going to sit it in a frame on his desk in work – aaawww!

How disappointing would it be to have photos like Jacquie’s friend as the only memory of what is one of the biggest days of your life. Those same photos will be shown to all your friends, family, future children and even grandkids one day.
Interestingly, I recently had a look around at many of the other photographers prices in our area and not only were Impact Images not the dearest, most of the professional photographers only differed in price by a couple of hundred dollars including us. Do you really think that small difference in price will be remembered in ten years time when you are still proud to bring out your wedding album?

I read the article on careful what you pay for Andrew, and there is just one small thing that i think you forgot to mention, and that is Jacqueline & Chris loved your work so much that they asked you to come all the way to Scotland to photograph their big day. I think that says it all.
